According to Tim Burton himself, he is a “technophobe” who would rather look at the sky than the internet.
While Tim Burton might be one of the most famous directors of this age, his social media presence is lacking. In past years, fans have speculated why this might be, but Burton himself finally clarified in a recent interview.
Burton’s Comments
During an interview with BBC News, Burton admitted that he was a “bit of a technophobe” and went on to explain exactly why.
“If I look at the internet, I found that I got quite depressed,” he claimed. “It scared me because I started to go down a dark hole. So I try to avoid it, because it doesn’t make me feel good.”
Burton, now 66 years old, experienced much of his life without the mass popularity the internet has today. For this reason among others, Burton seems hesitant to spend too much time online.
Known for directing famous movies such as “Beetlejuice”, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, and “Edward Scissorhands”, Burton himself has most likely never watched these movies, at least via a streaming service.
The Negative Effect
According to Burton’s comments, spending too much time on the internet has a negative effect on him, making him depressed.
“I get depressed very quickly, maybe more quickly than other people,” Burton mentioned. “But it doesn’t take me much to start to click and start to short circuit.”
According to Burton, he preferred to direct episodes of the hit Netflix series “Wednesday” and spend time outside, looking at the clouds.
Effects of the Internet
The internet has long had some notorious effects, although these are debated among scientists. And although the internet can vastly be great for uncensored media and communication, it also has its downsides.
As Burton says, the internet can cause people to “go down a dark hole” especially because of the nature of communication between different cultures and opinions being much more widely accessible.
